Anita Ann Mitchell Cullom
Mrs. Anita Ann Mitchell Cullom, 94, of Roanoke Rapids, joined her previously departed family and friends on April 18, 2019.
She was predeceased by an infant son, George Kenneth Cullom; her parents, John and Lula Lucas Mitchell, of Route 2, Littleton, NC; and George Sterling Cullom, her devoted husband of 62 years.
Mrs. Cullom is survived by a daughter, Bonnie Cullom Myrick (Marty), of North Chesterfield, VA; a son, Jerry Wayne Cullom, of Roanoke Rapids; two grandchildren, Angela Myrick-West (Dave), of Midlothian, VA; and Christopher Michael Cullom (Kara), of Zebulon, NC; and three great-grandchildren, Tristyn West, Bryson Cullom, and Easton Cullom.
Other survivors include a brother, John Mitchell, Jr. (Evelyn), of Rt. 2, Littleton; two nieces, Donna Mitchell Sellers (Danny), of Roanoke Rapids; and Mary Kay Mitchell Park of Henderson, NC; three maternal cousins, Estelle Naujaks, Carolyn Irvin, and Betty Brock, all of the Virginia Beach area; and one paternal cousin, Doris Locker, of Spring, Texas.
Mrs. Cullom was valedictorian of her high school class at Aurelian Springs and was accomplished not only in academics but also in art, creative writing, and sewing. She was a graduate of King's Business School in Raleigh. In 1942 as a World War II bride, she joined her husband at the Army Air Corps base in Lubbock, Texas, where she lived and worked until his deployment overseas.
She was an exemplary housewife and mother and was dedicated to her husband, children, parents, and grandchildren.
In the community, she was active in the Rosemary Elementary School PTA and taught Sunday School to third graders at Rosemary Methodist Church for several years.
In the 1960's, she and her husband founded Cullom Antiques and enjoyed buying trips to areas in NC, VA, and Pennsylvania and selling at various shows and at the Raleigh Flea Market, where they were regulars for more than 30 years. Through their business and associations with the Raleigh Bottle Club and the Richmond Bottle Club, they made many wonderful friends and considered that time one of their best and most enjoyable.
Later in life, she took great pleasure in her grandchildren and great-grandchildren and was deeply loved by them all.
Mrs. Cullom was blessed to have Jerry's special friend, Lana Balltzglier, and Mae Jenkins, her caretaker, whom she referred to as her "angels" as they helped her over the past several months.
Mrs. Cullom was the last original resident of her neighborhood, having resided there since 1955.
As per her wishes, a graveside service, officiated by Reverend Randy Martin, will be held at Crestview Cemetery on April 22 at 2 p.m.
